2012 State Roadway Cleanup - Athens & Ironton

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) worked with Keep Ohio Beautiful, Keep Southeast Ohio Beautiful, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to recruit volunteers for two spring litter cleanup events: one in Athens and one in Ironton.

On Saturday, April 14, 2012 hundreds of volunteers comprised of neighborhood groups, businesses and organizations to pick up thousands of pounds of litter, recyclables and debris between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

Waste Management was proud to be the recycling partner for the Great American Clean-up Kickoff Event at Wayne National Forest Headquarters on April 14. Because of Waste Management’s donation of its recycling and waste services, this was the first time that the State of Ohio’s Great American Clean-up Kickoff Event will utilize single-stream recycling. The recyclables that were collected by the volunteers on April 14 went to Waste Management’s recycling facility in Canal Winchester for processing.  Incorporating recycling into this event was truly the perfect way to help the environment for future generations.  Additionally, with assistance from the Athens City-County Health Department, to host a ‘Tire Amnesty’ program.

We would also like to thank G & J Pepsi-Cola Bottlers, Inc for donating Water and Beverages, Waste Management for donating the Recycled Bags, Rural Action for donation Trash Bags, and Athens County Soil & Water Conservation District for Loblolly Pines.

85 bags of trash were collected
39 bags of recyclables were collected
Total of 3,720 pounds collected

1500 tires were collected for a total of 36,000 pounds
